Born in Tbilisi in 1961 and based in Utrecht since 1994, Ezidi painter Bailoz Omarchali has built an artistic career shaped by formal training, exhibitions across several countries and a lasting interest in colour, movement and emotional expression.
After completing Secondary School No. 26 in Tbilisi, Omarchali studied at the M. Toidze Art School from 1984 to 1986, graduating with honours. He then continued at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts from 1988 to 1994, developing the technical and visual language that would shape his later work.
Omarchali’s paintings have been shown in both solo and group exhibitions. His portfolio records exhibitions in Moscow, Cologne, Paris, Brussels, St Petersburg, Amsterdam, Utrecht and other Dutch locations, while a number of his works are held in private collections.
His work moves between figurative, abstract and modern painting. Landscapes, still lifes, portraits and larger figurative compositions all appear in his portfolio. He also returns to scenes of celebration and movement, including weddings, folk dances and dancing figures, using a vivid palette and closely layered brushwork to create energy within the composition.
For Omarchali, a painting is not simply meant to be looked at. It should invite the viewer to pause, reflect and form a personal connection with the work. This idea gives his paintings an emotional purpose beyond their subject matter or visual form.
From the artistic training he received in Tbilisi to the portfolio he has developed in the Netherlands, Omarchali’s work reflects both range and continuity. Across different subjects and styles, colour remains central to his way of creating atmosphere, movement and dialogue with the viewer.
