Former Luxembourg Grand Duchess Highlights Wartime Violence Against Women

Former Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg and Afghan activist Chékéba Hachemi have renewed attention on the situation of women and children affected by sexual violence in conflict.

Speaking ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict on 19 June, they discussed the work of Stand Speak Rise Up!, an organisation founded by Maria Teresa in 2019 to support survivors and children born from wartime rape.

During the discussion, Hachemi referred to women they had met in refugee camps, including Syrian and Ezidi women, and highlighted the legal uncertainty faced by many children born from rape during conflict.

Maria Teresa also pointed to UN Resolution 2467, which recognises such children as victims with a right to reparation. She stressed that listening to survivors and believing them is an essential first step toward healing and dignity.
