Two Ezidi women who survived ISIS captivity are at the centre of 10 Years On: The Ezidi Genocide, a documentary scheduled to make its Canadian premiere in London, Ontario, on 25 October 2026. The film follows their survival, escape and the continuing struggle for freedom in the years after the Ezidi Genocide of 2014.

Directed by Bared Maronian, the documentary features Faiza Q. and Hala S. Their experiences give the film its focus: what happened to the women targeted by ISIS, how they survived, and what their lives have become since escaping captivity.

In August 2014, ISIS attacked Shingal, also known as Sinjar, in Iraq. The genocide involved mass killings, abductions and the sexual enslavement of Ezidi women and girls. For survivors, escaping their captors did not erase what they had endured. Nor did it bring freedom to everyone left behind.

The festival’s description places that unfinished reality alongside the two women’s stories, noting that many Ezidi women remain in captivity. The documentary therefore concerns more than the remembrance of an atrocity. It draws attention to people whose freedom has still not been secured, while following two survivors beyond the events through which audiences may first have learned about them.

The screening also has a direct connection to London. One of the documentary’s subjects is a Western University student who lives with her family in the city. For local audiences, the film brings the consequences of the genocide close to home: one of the women whose experiences it documents is now building her life among them.

The 53-minute documentary dates from 2024, ten years after the genocide began. Its Canadian premiere will take place more than twelve years after the attacks—a reminder of how much time has passed while captivity and the consequences of persecution remain unresolved.

Maronian and Jackie Abramian share the screenwriting and production credits. The screening will have English subtitles, with content warnings for violence and sexual violence.
