Several Ezidi-Populated Villages in Armenia Lose Power After Lightning Damages Substation
A lightning strike damaged a transformer at the Alagyaz local substation in Armenia’s Aparan region, leaving 11 villages without electricity.
The affected substation, operating at 35/10 kV, was damaged on June 12 at 18:16. As a result, electricity was cut off in the villages of Rya Taza, Mirak, Melik, Michnatun, Sipan, Avshen, Alagyaz, Gegarot, Tsilkar, Lernapa, and Jamshlu. Many of these villages are Ezidi-populated.
Electric Networks of Armenia said repair work began at 06:00 the following morning to replace the damaged transformer. The company stated that the work was expected to be completed within the next few hours.
The company apologised for the inconvenience caused by the outage.
The incident follows another lightning-related accident in Armenia earlier this week. On June 11, a bridge collapsed after being struck by lightning on the Yerevan–Sevan highway near the city of Charentsavan.
