New Genocide Case Opened in France – Perpetrator Committed Genocide against Ezidis in Syria

FIDH has reported that on October 9, 2024, Sabri Essid, also known as Abou Dojanah al-Faransi, was indicted by the Paris Criminal Court for genocide and crimes against humanity against the Ezidi population in Syria, committed by ISIS members, including French nationals. Bahzad Fahran of the NGO Kinyat emphasized that without an International Criminal Court investigation, national courts remain the sole option for justice for Ezidi victims.
The case stems from a judicial process initiated in 2016 by the FIDH and Kinyat to classify ISIS crimes as international offenses. Essid is accused of severe crimes against Ezidi women and children from 2014 to 2016, including enslavement and torture. Although presumed dead, French courts retain jurisdiction to prosecute him. The ongoing investigation began in 2019 following advocacy efforts that uncovered evidence against him, with Ezidi survivors willing to testify against his actions. This case could represent a significant advancement in addressing impunity for international crimes in France.
