Residents of the Bab Sinjar residential complex in western Mosul held a protest on 22 July 2026 against plans to evict families or sell the apartments through public auctions and private investment schemes.
The complex contains around 320 apartments occupied by displaced families, widows, low-income households, people with illnesses and families of those killed in conflict. Many residents were accommodated there after years of displacement and severe financial hardship.
Residents said they had repeatedly received demands to pay high rents or warnings that they must leave their homes before the apartments are offered for sale. They stressed that social welfare payments were insufficient to cover the proposed rents or secure alternative accommodation.
The protesters called on the governor of Nineveh and the relevant authorities to cancel the rent demands and grant permanent ownership of the apartments to their current residents. They warned that failure to act could displace hundreds of vulnerable families once again.
