George Aslan, a Turkish politician of Assyrian descent and deputy for Mardin, has raised the case of Bacînê in the Turkish Parliament, calling attention to the solar power plant project planned on land used by the Ezidi village in Midyat.
The issue concerns Bacînê, officially known as Güven, one of the few remaining Ezidi villages in Mardin. The village was emptied in the past due to pressure, discrimination, and security problems. In recent years, Ezidi families have begun returning to their ancestral land, rebuilding homes with their own means and trying to restore village life after decades of displacement.
In his parliamentary speech, Aslan said that at a time when people are trying to return and rebuild their lives, a private company is seeking to establish a solar energy system project on Merav, described as a shared living area of the village. He stressed that the project is being pursued despite the objections of the villagers.
Residents of Bacînê previously filed a lawsuit against the project. However, the Mardin Second Administrative Court rejected the case, and the decision was later upheld by Turkey’s Council of State. According to Aslan, the fact that the court ruled against the findings of the expert report, and that this ruling was then approved by the Council of State, has caused distrust among Ezidis living both in Turkey and abroad toward official authorities.
During a session of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, George Aslan, DEM Party deputy for Mardin, raised the case of Bacînê from the parliamentary rostrum. Speaking during debate on Article 11 of Bill No. 270 on amendments to certain laws, Aslan drew attention to the solar energy project planned on Merav, the shared living area of the Ezidi village of Bacînê in Midyat.
He stated that Bacînê is one of the few remaining Ezidi villages in Mardin and reminded Parliament that its residents are trying to return, rebuild their homes, and restore life after years of displacement.
By raising the issue in Parliament, Aslan brought the concerns of Bacînê residents into Turkey’s national political arena. For the Ezidi people of Bacînê, the case is not only about a solar power project. It is about land, return, dignity, ancestral memory, and the right to rebuild life without new obstacles being placed in their way.
Ezidi Times thanks George Aslan for voicing the concerns of the Ezidi people of Bacînê from the parliamentary rostrum.
