Ezidi athlete Jilan Jaro from Shekhan in Iraq’s Nineveh province has achieved a historic result in women’s weightlifting after lifting 240 kilograms at a national championship.
Jaro competed in the 70 kg division at the championship held in Sulaymaniyah province, where around 20 female athletes took part. Her result earned her first place and made her the first woman in Iraq in her category to reach a 240 kg lift in national competition.
The achievement marks an important step in Jaro’s sporting career. Before reaching 240 kg, she had previously lifted 230 kg and 235 kg. At the championship, her original target was 230 kg, but the competitive atmosphere and her determination pushed her to go further.
Jaro has been training for four years and now also works as a gym trainer, helping women build strength and confidence through fitness. She credits much of her progress to the support she receives from her family and her captain, who have encouraged her throughout her journey.
Following her national victory, Jaro is already looking ahead. Her next goal is to compete in a championship in Baghdad, and she also hopes to take part in international competitions in Lebanon or the United Arab Emirates later this year.
Her success is a significant moment for Ezidi women in sport. Jaro’s achievement shows the growing presence of women athletes in Iraq and highlights the determination of young Ezidis who continue to pursue excellence despite limited visibility and support.
Congratulations, Jilan Jaro. May you reach even greater heights!
