Nadia Murad to Speak at UB on Genocide and Advocacy for Survivors
Nobel Laureate and UN Goodwill Ambassador Nadia Murad will speak at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the University at Buffalo’s (UB) Mainstage Theatre, as part of the Distinguished Speakers Series. Murad is a prominent advocate for survivors of genocide and sexual violence, particularly focusing on the Ezidi people. Her bestselling memoir, The Last Girl, details her captivity by ISIS and the genocide against the Ezidis.

Murad’s advocacy highlights the use of sexual violence in conflict. She was appointed the first UN Goodwill Ambassador for Survivors of Human Trafficking in 2016, and has received multiple honors, including the Václav Havel Award for Human Rights and the Sakharov Prize. In 2018, she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to end sexual violence in conflict. Murad has also worked on key UN resolutions and gender equality initiatives, including advocating for laws to protect women’s rights and leading efforts to hold ISIS accountable for its crimes.
