A screening of the documentary Angels of Sinjar, followed by a discussion with Ezidi witnesses Hanifa A. K. M. and Fawziya A. S, will take place in Oldenburg, Germany, on 2 August 2026.

Organised by Pena-Ger e.V., the evening will be held one day before Ezidis commemorate twelve years since ISIS launched its genocidal attack on Sinjar on 3 August 2014. The programme begins at 5:00 p.m. at Cine k Oldenburg, and admission is free.

According to the organisers, the event is intended to create space for personal testimony, remembrance and direct engagement with the continuing consequences of the genocide. It will also serve as an expression of solidarity with survivors and help ensure that their experiences remain visible.

Angels of Sinjar

The documentary Angels of Sinjar follows the continuing search for Ezidi women and girls who were abducted during the genocide and examines the determination of families seeking to bring their relatives home.

The screening will be followed by a discussion involving two women whose lives and families were directly affected by the crimes committed against the Ezidi people.

Hanifa A. K. M.

Hanifa A. K. M. survived the violence committed by ISIS, narrowly escaping abduction herself. Her younger sisters, however, were kidnapped and enslaved.

Since then, Hanifa has worked to locate her sisters and bring them home. According to the event organisers, she also succeeded in helping secure the release of some of her siblings from captivity. Her family’s experience is addressed in Angels of Sinjar.

Hanifa is now closely involved with Pena-Ger as a colleague and advocate. Her work draws attention to the suffering and experiences of oppressed women, particularly Ezidi women.

Fawziya A. S.

Fawziya A. S. was nine years old when ISIS attacked Sinjar and abducted her in 2014.

According to information published by Pena-Ger, she was taken through Syria and Turkey before later being brought to Egypt. After more than ten years, she was located in Gaza and was able to escape. She has lived in Germany since February 2025.

Fawziya is now involved with Pena-Ger not only as someone receiving support, but also as a friend and colleague. She works to make the voices of oppressed women, especially Ezidi women, more visible.

Her participation in the Oldenburg event will allow audiences to hear directly from someone whose childhood and life were profoundly shaped by abduction, displacement and the continuing consequences of genocide.

Moderated by Duleem A. H.

The discussion following the screening will be moderated by Duleem A. H.

The organisers describe Duleem as an Ezidi refugee, an aspiring physician and someone personally affected by the subject of the evening. His professional and personal experience will help guide the conversation with sensitivity and provide space for remembrance, listening and meaningful exchange.

Twelve years since the genocidal attack

On 3 August 2014, ISIS began its coordinated attack against Sinjar. Thousands of Ezidis were killed, abducted, enslaved or forced to flee their homes. Women and girls were subjected to systematic sexual violence and enslavement, while boys were separated from their families and subjected to forced indoctrination and recruitment.

Twelve years later, many Ezidis remain missing. Survivors continue to live with the psychological, physical and social consequences of the genocide, while many displaced families have still been unable to return safely to Sinjar.

Events such as the Oldenburg screening help preserve survivor testimony and ensure that the genocide is not reduced to a historical date. The search for missing Ezidis, accountability for perpetrators and protection of the Ezidi people remain urgent and unresolved.
