Ezidi Wrestler Malkhas Amoyan Crowned 2-Time World Champion – A Triumph for the Ezidi People

Malkhas Amoyan, the celebrated Ezidi Greco-Roman wrestler representing Armenia, has once again made history by claiming gold at the 2025 Senior World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. Competing in the 77 kg category, Amoyan defeated Japan’s Olympic champion Nao Kusaka with a decisive 10–1 victory in the final, earning his second world championship title.

A Hero’s Welcome
Upon returning to Yerevan, Amoyan was greeted with great pomp at Zvartnots International Airport. Fans, sports figures, and members of Armenia’s Ezidi community celebrated his triumph with applause, traditional folk music, and the symbolic throwing of the champion into the air—a gesture of admiration and pride.

Joining Amoyan in this historic moment were fellow Armenian Greco-Roman wrestlers Slavik Galstyan and Hrachya Poghosyan, who also won bronze medals in their respective weight categories, adding to Armenia’s remarkable medal tally at the championships.

A Year of Unbeaten Glory
Following his bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics—his only “defeat” since—Amoyan has remained undefeated throughout 2025. Competing in the German Bundesliga for Germania Vikings / KSC Hösbach, he triumphed in ten consecutive bouts against some of the sport’s most formidable competitors, including Asian champion Aram Vardanyan and U23 world champion Alexandrin Gutiu.

At the 2025 European Championships, Amoyan continued his dominance, winning his fourth European gold with commanding victories in four matches. His preparation included a flawless performance at the Poland Open, where he defeated all five opponents, setting the stage for his ultimate conquest at the World Championships.

At the Zagreb World Championships, Amoyan showcased the pinnacle of his skill, defeating top international wrestlers on his way to the final:

  • Round of 32: Kamal Bey (USA) — 2:1
  • Round of 16: Mateusz Bernatek (Poland) — 10:0
  • Quarterfinal: Ahmet Yilmaz (Turkey) — 3:1
  • Semifinal: Alireza Abdevali (Iran) — 5:1
  • Final: Nao Kusaka (Japan) — 10:1

With this victory, Amoyan finished 2025 with a perfect record: 24 bouts, 24 wins, and a combined score of 177:17—an extraordinary demonstration of skill, strategy, and resilience.
