Germany Provided Over €53 Million to Iraq in Development Funding in 2025

Germany provided 53.25 million euros in development funding to Iraq in 2025, according to the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The funding, worth more than 62 million dollars, is part of Berlin’s broader development cooperation with Iraq.

According to the ministry, support for Senegal continues through a number of active projects rather than through one separate funding package. These projects include psychosocial support, help with restoring livelihoods, especially in agriculture, renovation of basic infrastructure, and housing construction.

Şengal, which makes part of the Ezidi homeland, continues to face the long-term consequences of the ISIS genocide of August 2014. Thousands were killed, many more were displaced, and deep psychological and social wounds remain. Germany officially recognised the genocide against the Ezidi people in 2023 and has since continued to support reconstruction and recovery efforts.

Germany has also funded psychosocial therapy and rehabilitation services for displaced Ezidis living in camps in Iraq through implementing agencies such as GIZ.

At the same time, Berlin says its policy toward Iraq has shifted. Germany ended its humanitarian aid to Iraq as of 2023, arguing that the country’s overall situation had improved. Its current approach focuses more on long-term development, civilian projects, economic growth, energy security, and adaptation to climate change.

The latest figures show that Germany remains involved in Iraq, including in projects affecting Şengal, while moving away from emergency aid and toward development-based cooperation.
