Aida Ezdit: The Sacred Feast in Honor of Siltan Êzîd

On the 16th of December, the three-day fast of Rojîyê Êzid began, a sacred spiritual period dedicated to Siltan Êzîd (Ezdit), one of the manifestations of the Creator in Sharfadin. Observed from December 16th to 18th, this fast is a time of prayer, self-reflection, and spiritual cleansing. It culminates in a joyful celebration honoring Siltan Êzîd and the divine light Siltan Êzîd represents.

Aida Ezdit, the feast day that follows on Friday the 19th, is one of the most significant holidays for Ezidis. Falling during the darkest part of the year, it symbolizes the return of God’s light, made visible through the sun. In Sharfadin, the sun is not merely a celestial body but a sacred sign of God on Earth and the source of all life. As the days slowly lengthen after the fast, the festival embodies hope, renewal, and the awakening of nature. Through this ritual, Ezidis reconnect with the spiritual core of their faith, celebrating the increasing visibility of divine light.

During Rojîyê Êzid, followers fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining not only from food but also from all sins: lying, stealing, blasphemy, and other wrongdoings. It is a time for purification of both body and spirit.

The schedule of the week is as follows:

Monday – Serbir: Fasting is forbidden. An animal is sacrificed in honor of Sultan Ezid, or a donation is made to those in need.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday – Rojî: Fasting from sunrise to sunset with spiritual reflection and prayer.

Friday – Roja Îdê: The fast concludes with a day of celebration, marked by Ezidi foods, pastries like kulîçe, and gathering with relatives and friends in honor of Sultan Ezid.
