Historical step for Ezidis in Diyarbakır

A significant development has taken place in the Bismil district of Diyarbakır, where a new monument dome has been constructed in the Yasince village cemetery to support Ezidi funeral practices. The project, completed by Bismil Municipality, addresses a long-standing need for a dedicated space where Ezidis can carry out burial ceremonies in accordance with their religious traditions.

For many years, Ezidis in the region faced difficulties in performing funeral rites aligned with their beliefs, due to the absence of appropriate infrastructure. The newly built dome now provides a designated area for these rituals, marking an important step toward respecting freedom of belief and cultural identity.

The structure was used for the first time during a funeral ceremony for an Ezidi individual whose final wish was to be buried in his homeland after living in Germany for more than two decades. The ceremony, carried out according to Ezidi traditions, highlighted the emotional and symbolic importance of returning to one’s place of origin.

Local officials emphasized that the initiative reflects a broader commitment to supporting the Ezidi people, who have longstanding roots in the region despite significant migration over the years. Efforts have also included improving access to the cemetery and ensuring that religious practices can be carried out with dignity.

Beyond its physical function, the monument dome represents continuity, memory, and belonging. It stands as a reminder of the enduring connection between Ezidis in the diaspora and their ancestral lands, offering a space where traditions can be preserved and respected.
