French Judge Orders Trial for Genocide and Enslavement of Ezidi Girl

25.09.2024
A 35-year-old French woman, Sonia Mejri, is facing trial for genocide, crimes against humanity, including enslavement, torture, and rape, stemming from her time living with her former husband, Abdelnasser Benyoucef, a key ISIS figure, in Syria in 2015. Mejri and Benyoucef are accused of committing atrocities against a Ezidi teenage girl, whom they enslaved. Benyoucef allegedly raped and tortured the girl, while Mejri is accused of complicity in these acts, including attempting to force the victim’s conversion to Islam.
Benyoucef, who is believed dead, faces charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. He was convicted in absentia in France for a 2015 terror attack attempt. Mejri, who was imprisoned upon her return to France, maintains her innocence, with her lawyer arguing she is a “repentant.” The case relies on the testimony of the Ezidi victim, who was 16 at the time, and endured significant mistreatment, including being denied basic necessities and raped by both Mejri and Benyoucef. Mejri will stand trial for aiding and abetting these crimes. France is the third state after Germany ans Sweden to open a case concerning the Ezidi genocide in 2014.
